This week I finished reading Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari and I was blown away by it, and since I had a few hours spare for a quick side project I thought I’d have a go at re-doing the cover (which isn’t at all necessary, I really like the cover that Vintage are using at the moment). I settled down with a pad and did some sketches, and then worked up a few on the Mac. Being a quick project everything is very much a work in progress, rather than worked up, thought through designs, but it was just for fun and I think a couple of the ideas would be worth exploring if I wanted to take them further, but for now I’m going to leave them as they stand.
The current cover features a thumb print, which I thought was a great device, so for the first concept I explored making more of that, incorporating the title etc into the markings.
I then looked into playing with aspects of the Tree of Life and using tree rings as a time line device, both with and without words, and explored a few designs using this device.
The other sketches that required a more photographic route I’ve left as sketches for now – although I do like the idea of a footprint in scorched earth, and that would be the one I would have liked to investigate further.
